‘Now, you see that branch a little way below you, off to the right?’ Shadow asked, sitting under the tree and looking up at Kitty. Kitty nodded, a bit too scared to miaow back. ‘Shuffle backwards a bit towards the tree trunk, then jump down on to that branch. I promise, it’s nice and strong. Use your tail for balance,’ Shadow called.

Kitty took a deep breath, and then did as he’d explained. She made it!

‘Well done, Kitty!’ Shadow said. ‘Now, just one more branch – can you see the one just below you? I left my claw marks on it a long time ago, so that I know which branch to use when I climb down. Jump on to there, and then you’ll be able to make the leap down to the ground easily.’

‘I’m not sure …’ Kitty began. The ground still seemed so far away.
